18th-Century Ship Found at Trade Center Site - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

18th-Century Ship Found at Trade Center Site - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com: "The “175 Water St.” so-called “Ronson Ship” after the developer Harold Ronson, was found and excavated in winter. The “apple cheek” bow was removed and preserved. I was told if the 2nd Ave subway was still then in 1982 being dug, a case could have been made to preserve the “whole” ship as part of its stern was under the NYC sidewalk. Evidence of shipworms from the Caribbean and North Atlantic were in the “sacrificial planking” the first find. Visited by over 10,000 New Yorkers one Saturday, it like Reggie Jackson, left the city. It was to be on display in the Mariners Museum in Virginia now in partnership with the South Street Seaport, I hope is involved in this." YouTube “The Ronson Ship
